This is where the migrants from South America are being dropped off now. Also, from my understanding, people are being arrested. This is from what I heard, not positive.
There were only a few stands. Desolate. Nice Mexican stand
I Love it .. So many Vendors , All kind of different things , you're hungry they sell fresh tacos , tamales , Funnel cake w/ scoop ice cream, shaved ice different flavors to choose from , peanuts , raisins, dehydrated fruit and everything is good, environment is great and they have General merchandise New & Used ..
My heart hurts for this rating.
This event was a staple in my childhood memories. Going here with my old man back when it was on the otherside of the highway (thanks UIC, for kicking everyone out). But even when they were forced to move across the highway it was still many blocks long. You would take most of the day to walk and shop and eat.
After many years I brought my family down here this past Sunday; Oct 1st....
I was hoping to show my kids a bit of our history. Only to be met with what was less then half a block; a total of 6 vendors and 3 food stalls... again, my heart hurts that we lost this Chicago staple.
Talking to one of the vendors; it sounds like it will be just a matter of time before it is all gone. The city is taxing them out, they don't want them there anymore. They require everyone to get sale license and tax it so high that they cannot afford to just sell nick-nacks.
I recommend the few food vendors to move shop to Wolfe in Rosemont. Unfortunately, Wolfe is doing it right and on a good Sunday, can draw in over 800 vendors. They are the new Flee market doing the none winter season.
I wish Maxwell the best, you had been good to my family and gave me great childhood memories. I pray, somehow you can come back stronger as you once were.
Thank You.
14th and Halstead was the real deal, this isnt!!! The littered and dusty vacant lot where so much talent was catapulted into the ears of the entire world should have been saved and put on landmark status. What a disservice to Chicago's historical figures that brought different people together to have a good time! Before there was Hollywood, there was Maxwell Street!!!!
I came here, i think the weather had alot to do with the fact there was not alot of tiny shops available, however we did find a few good items such as a cute tiny coat for our pet Mace, and cute shoes so he can go out for a walk in style, I also found water proof gloves for my daughters, mind you I went to barns and fleet and spend 60.00$ on 2 pairs.. fully regret that, in this out door flea market you will find, brand name coats, hats, gloves, toys new and used, sweaters, pants, baseball hats, sports wear (original and knock off), they also sell makeup, soap, detergent, deodorant, toiletries basically, you will also find plants, they have several food stands the food is very good, they flea market and I said is out doors they close the street in order to host the event and it's only on sunday. I recommend going to this flea markets during the summer at this time it is late November and in my opinion it is worth going but not as many shops. they close at 2 pm.
It’s not what it once was, of course, but still fun to come here to look around. Come hungry. Would love the market to triple in size with many more vendors and booths.
Must try the Oaxaca tamales at Mi Tia tamales. A fresh made tortilla is the best. I will never eat tortilla out of a package again.
